National merit scholar cutoff

Im really confused on the purpose of the commended scholar cutoff as opposed to the national merit semi-finalist cutoff. I know being a semi-finalist can get you scholarships and good standing with some colleges. Does being a commneded scholar so anything of the sort? Additionally I would like to know if I qualified for commended scholar.
